Hey there! My name is Dael Sassoon and welcome to my personal blog, where I hope I’ll be able to indulge your wanderlust spirits and environmentally inclined minds with thoughts drawn from my experiences, memories and academic education. Before I start, I hope this post finds you safe. The past months of 2020 have been so hard and surreal, so full of loss, so full of change. It will be strange to look back on this moment, maybe read this post again in a few years’ time, and contemplate about how much the world will have changed since this pivotal point of our lives. I have a feeling we will advance towards a better future. Now is the time to fix the world’s problems and finally move towards a better society and a healthier ecosystem. Let’s begin my introduction by stating one obvious fact: I love to travel. Although I realise it has been engrained in our genetic code as humans to be wanderers and nomads, making me no more special than anybody who has roamed the planet in the past 200,000 years (or anyone on Instagram), I would like to leave my own stamp on this wonderful thing called the internet. I have always been eager to see new places, to experience the beauty of our planet, and be a witness to the legacy of both past and present civilisations, as well as the jaw-dropping power of nature. As a kid, and sometimes now as an adult too although far less often, I spent hours painting and drawing, depicting the world and expressing my imagination on canvas or on paper. My love for travel and nature has led me to pursue an education in Geography, which has allowed me to experience cultures and realities that have opened my mind to the many wonders of the world, both beautiful and sad. Currently, I am a PhD student looking at the formation of peatlands in the Peruvian Amazon. Before starting my doctorate, I have worked on the ecology, environmental past and conservation of woodlands, lakes and forests in various parts of the world, including Wales, Switzerland and Italy. Have a look at my "Travel Photography" section, or find out more on my About Me page! In my studies, I have thought much about the role of humans on Earth. We are conscious beings with the ability to both curate and destroy whatever we touch. We can live in harmony with nature and each other for centuries but then, as quickly as we rose, we can come tumbling down. Our current society relies on the use of resources to power our megacities and our technology, but whilst supporting our lifestyle and progress we are destroying our forests, our oceans and our skies. A better understanding and awareness of the consequences of human activities on the environment must be achieved. To continue our journey through knowledge and history, we must learn how to work together as humans, and we must learn how to work together with nature. We must put aside our selfish desires if we want a better world. You’ll hear people saying that by the time change happens we’ll all be dead, so we might as well enjoy life while we’re still alive, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Think about how quickly society adjusted to Covid-19, and how quickly jellyfish reappeared in the Venice after we stopped polluting its waters. There must be a way for both us and nature to thrive.
I look forward to sharing my insights and experiences from the depths of the Amazon or from atop Alpine glaciers and I hope I can inspire you. At the very least, I hope my posts can be a fun and stimulating read accompanied by coffee and biscuits! Stay tuned and stay wanderlust! Dael
